Well, the truth is, there are no hijinks. We’re absolutely serious. (x)
In the audio commentaries for the series DVD collection, it is mentioned that there is a subplot for Inara which was not developed in the series or the film. The producers mention foreshadowing events that hinted at this plot. During a panel at 2008’s DragonCon, Morena Baccarin confirmed that Inara was indeed dying of a terminal illness.
The Captain’s gone and got himself in trouble.
Puncher: River Tam
Punchee: a Reaver
Memorable lines: “My turn.”
Why it’s awesome: We’ve been waiting literally the whole movie for this moment - the turnaround, the payoff to all the setup, the moment when little wounded River changes from the victim of government conspiracy to the badass who beats up everything. It comes when our heroes are their very lowest point, some are dead (well, it does say Joss Whedon at the bottom of the page) and the rest are pretty much about to be, and when the audience is just starting to seriously consider whether he means to make it a Total Party Kill, when up pops River. She’s been both broken bird and the central macguffin of the story line since her introduction, and at this moment she at last comes into her own, unleashing the epic fight scene of the film, and the first bit of success our heroes have seen in a long long time. And, naturally, it all begins with a face punch.

Mal: “Wait, go back to the part where you’re my wife? Zoe, how come I have a wife?”
Jayne: “You got a wife? All I got was that dumb-ass stick that sounds like it’s rainin’. How come you got a wife!?”
How have I not realized this until just now?
